When I started high school in 1958, my father sat
me down for a talk about my future and the direction it might take.
He made two things very clear: First, that he would provide me with
a college education, which he did; and second, that he would provide
me with what he believed was equally valuable— a marketable
skill.
After World War II, he learned and perfected the art of furniture
repair and restoration. His business became very successful and
he became one of the most respected craftsmen in his field. He counseled
me that if I were to become a man of skill, I would never suffer
at the hands of a despotic employer, nor would I be subject to the
whims of an unpredictable economy. He convinced me that if I were
faithful to that skill and dedicated myself to its perfection, I
would someday value it as my best education.
I learned the skills of furniture repair and restoration at my father's
side. He mentored me in the craft until I became as expert as he.
I can truthfully say that while my formal education made it possible
for me to communicate, study and manage my affairs, it is my skill
that has fulfilled my desire to bring artisanship to a mechanical
world. I can also proudly say that from the time I was sixteen years
old, I have never bowed to an oppressive boss, nor have I experienced
a day without work.
The legacy of my father, the skills he passed on, and the valued
